Tvrđava Forte Mare is a fortress a short distance away from the main pier in Herceg Novi on the side of the Bay of Kotor.
The fortress was founded in the XIV c. by Tvdko I, the ruler of Bosnia, to protect the area from attacks from the sea. At various times the fortress was in the hands of the Ottoman empire, the Venetian Republic, and Austro-Hungary.
In the course of centuries, the fortress was extended and reconstructed, that is why it is in a perfect condition now and is open for public visits (the entrance fee is EUR 2). From the walls and the viewpoint opens a marvelous view of Herceg Novi, the Bay and the mountains. In the summer, the fortress hosts various cultural events and entertainments, including festivals, dramatic performances, public viewings for adults and children. The events guide is available on the website.
