Old Town — the historical center of Kotor — is located in the southeastern part of the Bay of Kotor, at the bottom of the Lovcen mountain ridge.
Kotor is considered one of the most well-preserved medieval cities. It's a UNESCO world heritage site.
Since the XV and until the XVIII centuries the town was controlled by the Venecian Republic, which influenced its arthitectural image.
Most churches, museums and castles are located in the Old Town. The town is surrounded by a fortress wall, and St. Joseph's (San Giovanni's) tower towers above the city from the Lovcen mountain ridge. You can get into the Old Town from 3 gates: the Sea Gate (western, the main one), the River Gate (northern) and Gurdic Gate (southern).
